There was more gloomy news for energy customers today as Npower becane the latest company to announce large price rises.

The company is the biggest supplier of electricity in the UK, and has around 6 million customers in total, who will be forced to fork out an extra 13.4% for their gas, and 15% for their electricity.

The double-digit rises follow similar rises announced by Npower as recently as January this year, and will cost the average household an extra £9.50 a month.

The company blamed the usual culprit of rising wholesale gas prices, which have trebled since 2003.
