EDF prices up 19%

EDF Energy, Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

EDF Energy have announced a new round of energy price increases, as high wholesale energy costs continue to bump up the expense of both consumer and commercial energy.

From July 31st, EDF’s 5 million residential customers will see their gas bills rise by 19%, with electricity up by 9.1%.

It is the second time this year that EDF have raised their prices, although they are to launch a fixed-rate, prepay electricity package which will guarantee no more hikes until 2010.

Derek Lickorish of EDF Energy predictably blamed the latest rises on wholesale prices, saying:

“We have been absorbing some of the costs of increased
wholesale prices in the hope they would ease. However, prices have remained high with little prospect for reduction in the foreseeable future.”
